Our laundry “room” is a closet in the hall leading to the guest bathroom. Here is a picture of the laundry closet (and a sneak peek at the before of the guest bath) from the day we first toured the house.
I did not like the louvered doors – they were dust collectors, and when open, they were in the way. So we ditched the doors and hung curtains with holdbacks – that way they can simply be moved to the side on laundry day without protruding into the hall.
The closet is wider than the washer and dryer, so we had a board cut to the width of the closet placed over our front load washer and dryer. This provided a great surface where items would not fall beside or behind the washer and dryer.
*However, when we got rid of the front load washer (you can read about that here), we had to reconfigure the board.
Now there is still a great surface over the dryer, and a shelf behind the washer.
We painted the closet (yes, I paint my closets ) and changed out the original wire shelving above the washer and dryer. This is where we store all our Christmas decorations.
Finally, we added the small rod above the dryer to hold hangers (I hang dry all my work clothes so it is very convenient to have the empty hangers here so I can hang each item as it comes out of the washer), and then a larger rod across the top of the closet to hang clothes to dry.
It is a small closet, but it is now very functional.
