Earlier this week I shared with you my niece’s bedroom makeover. Today I am going to show you how I made her memo board.
My sister purchased an open frame and fabric from Hobby Lobby. The first thing I did was cut a piece of foam board the size of the frame opening, and then wrap the fabric around the foam board, simply taping the edges of the fabric to the back of the foam board. (If you want to use your board as a pin board, you will want to apply cork to the foam board with a spray adhesive before covering it with the fabric.)
Then came adding the ribbon. Both the wrapping of the fabric and adding the ribbon SHOULD have been easy, but the chevron fabric made both very challenging! It was a pain to get the fabric straight horizontally as well as vertically. And then the ribbon – I am very analytical so of course I measured out even spacing for the ribbon on all sides. But with the ribbon placed where it should be, it did not look good with the chevron pattern. So it took quite a while playing with the ribbon to come up with placement that worked. Here you can see where I would place the ribbon over the board and then lay the frame on top to see how it looked.
When I finally came up with a configuration that worked, I taped the ends of the ribbon to the back of the foam board. I then inserted the board into the frame and used one of my favorite tools:
This shoots the little points in the back of the frame that you can bend up to easily change what is in the frame. Before I had this, I would use staples to hold my boards in, but to change that, you would have to pull out the staple. This makes life easy!
Then the only item remaining was to glue and tack where the ribbon intersects so that it will hold items. My sister decided she did not want all of the intersections attached so that larger items could be placed under the ribbon. So, just decide which intersections you want attached and then apply a small amount of fabric glue under each ribbon and press down. Then apply a thumb tack over the intersection. And then you have a custom memo board.
(When I took the above picture, my sister mentioned that the lamp shade was plain and boring, so I am currently working on that – I will share that project when I am finished!)
